The Choctaw Casino Resort and Choctaw Casino Bingo complex is a major tourist destination for Durant, the State of Oklahoma, North Texas, including the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex, Arkansas, Louisiana.

On April 25 the Choctaw Nation broke ground on its largest project to date. Now on its third expansion of the Casino & Resort in Durant since 2006, the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma is not only breaking ground, but also breaking records with this latest growth spurt.

The number of hotel rooms will increase by 1,000, giving the casino and resort a total of more than 1,600 rooms, making it the largest hotel room count in the state.

Chief Gary Batton said, “Today is a special day for the Choctaw Nation as we embark upon an expansion journey that will result in a top-tier entertainment offering for our region and will spur economic growth for Durant and our state, plus new employment opportunities for our tribal and community members.”

Along with more rooms, the more-than-$500 million expansion will also bring an expanded game floor, new pools with a lazy river, larger parking garage, retail space, entertainment options and dining venues making the casino and resort a true destination.

“The expansion will go a long way in meeting the demands of our growing customer base,” said Batton.

The groundbreaking ceremony wasn’t all talk about potential new customers and their revenue stream.

Janie Dillard, senior executive officer of the commerce division, had praises to share all around, especially for the team that helped put the expansion efforts together, saying, “You do not do this with one person, you do it with a team of people.” Dillard went on to show appreciation to Chief Gary Batton, Assistant Chief Jack Austin Jr. and the tribal council for the trust and confidence they put in the team that put the expansion together.

The Choctaw Nation opened its first high-stakes bingo hall in 1987 on the same 55 acres the casino currently sits on. Dillard was emotional when speaking about the expansion project and the casino’s history. “I was here when we had 100 employees and we were broke. When
we made the first million dollars we thought...this is awesome. That’s [the bingo hall] the little house that made us,” said Dillard.

From the time the original bingo hall started making those large profits, the Nation has used that money to help its members. Each of the expansion projects and all of the other Choctaw businesses have been able to add to the offerings of the Nation. That money has helped many people.

“It helps to put more kids through college and build more hospitals. Our tribal members are our shareholders,” said Dillard.

The additional opportunities and resources that the expansion will bring to the area were not far from Batton’s mind either.

“To me it’s about the creation of jobs and opportunities for our tribal members and the community. They say the rising tide raises all ships so that’s what we’re going to do,” said Batton.

The Choctaw Casino Resort in Durant, Oklahoma, is heavily marketed as being just an hour’s drive north of Dallas. This makes a lot of sense, as the Dallas metropolitan area is home to over 7 million people, and over 80% of the 300,000 people that visit the Choctaw Casino Resort each year are from Texas, so the marketing campaign is working.

This resort is owned by the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, one of the largest Indian tribes in the nation, with lands in excess of 10,000 square miles and a quarter million people living on them.

The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma have been very successful in business of late and now generate almost a billion dollars in revenue each year, and operate a total of 7 casinos. The Chocktaw Casino Resort in Durant, where the tribe is headquartered, is the crown jewel of their properties.

The property started off as the Choctaw Casino Bingo, opening on the site in 1987, the first Choctaw casino to be built. Back then the games that were offered at Indian casinos in Oklahoma were limited, but the very next year, in 1988, a wider variety of casino gaming was permitted, and the Choctaw were quick to take advantage of the new laws.

As the business grew, the property was expanded, starting in 2006 with the building of a $60 million resort, now known as the South Casino, and the name became changed to the Choctaw Casino Resort. In 2010, the Grand Hotel Tower and the North Casino was completed, replacing the old bingo hall, giving this property not one but two large casinos and significantly expanding its hotel and other facilities.

When it was all said and done, the Choctaw ended up with over 218,000 square feet of gaming space in its two casinos, both over 100,000 square feet. These properties are located alongside one another, and guests can easy move between them, expanding the variety of gaming that they are able to access while visiting this resort.

The property, and the Grand Tower in particular, is of a very modern design and resembles some of the most popular hotel casinos in Las Vegas, although on a smaller scale. This may not have cost billions to build and have thousands of hotel rooms, but this is by no means a small resort, they have spent $360 million on it so far, and their 431 room hotel complex does make it a resort of significant size, just not large by Vegas standards.

The Features of the Choctaw Casino Resort

This resort is not only large but of a very high quality as well, earning a four diamond designation by AAA and being highly rated overall. There are 4 different hotels here, the Grand Tower, the newest addition, the original Spa Tower, The Choctaw Lodge, and the Choctaw Inn, all located together on this property.

There’s also an RV Park with 77 premium sites and a large common building, and offers RV guests all the comforts of home in addition to their RVs.

Rates at the hotel start at $99 a night, if you book well in advance, and there’s several types of standard rooms to choose from. All of the rooms here are non smoking, and although the hotel does still announce that they have smoking rooms available as well, you can’t book them anymore which suggests that they are a thing of the past, for now.

Smokers are likely to avoid this resort, but they presumably are able to keep the hotel booked up with non smokers, so we could even call this a niche hotel, and non smokers will certainly be delighted over this.

The rooms here are nice, perhaps not as luxurious as you would expect from a four diamond hotel, but they certainly do stand out in this area of the country, and there’s certainly nothing of this quality at hotels and motels in the small city of Durant. Some casino guests do stay offsite though and the resort offers free shuttle service to and from the casino.

You can also bring your pets here, as the Choctaw Lodge is pet friendly, for a small additional cleaning fee. Aside from the rooms, the resort offers several choices of suites for those guests who prefer additional space and luxury.

Dining options are headlined by the 1832 Steakhouse, a four star restaurant with more affordable prices than you usually see at restaurants serving food of such high quality.

Butterfield’s Buffet offers a great selection of food, specializing in Tex Mex and Southern comfort dishes, with fabulous deals for casino players presenting their Rewards cards. Bamboo Noodle Bar offers a tasty selection of cuisine from several Asian countries.

The Blue Moon Café offers the style and delicious food of 1950’s style diners. Gilley’s offers musical entertainment as well as a food menu. Jackpot Java serves up Starbucks coffee. Krispy Krunchy Chicken dishes up Cajun style chicken meals.

There’s also a Papa John’s on site serving their famous pizza with the freshest ingredients. Smashburger smashes rather than grinds their beef for their burgers, creating a unique taste. The Parrot Beach Bar and Grill serves both food and beverages poolside. There’s also a Subway and the Tomatillo Mexican Grill.

There are 5 other bars and lounges to enjoy your favorite beverages at. The Oasis provides a large pool area with cabanas and other features. There’s a full service spa on hand as well as a fitness center. The District provides entertainment for the whole family, with an arcade, a bowling center, a laser tag arena, a sports bar, and a food court.

The Choctaw Grand Theater provides an ongoing array of live entertainment, with some of the biggest names of the past performing. There’s also 4 retail shops that you can browse.

Overall, there’s lots to do here besides gamble, although the gambling certainly is the headline event.
